The Roots of Yoga

  • Mangala Studios 73 Grattan Street Carlton, VIC, 3053 Australia (map)

A study of the major literary sources of yoga in four parts:

The Earlier Upanishads - 14th October 2018
(Mainly Brihad- aranyaka, Taittirya and Manduka Upanishad)

10.00-12.30am - Morning Tea provided.

Please note: While it will be possible to enjoy the session simply by attending, if you wish to further your yoga studies, some pre-reading would be useful. I recommend the Penguin collection of “The Upanishads” edited by Juan Mascaro – it is not definitive but it is respectful, in English, small and inexpensive. However any collection of the mentioned Upanishads would be useful. There is also an excellent selection translated by Alistair Shearer – these are no means exhaustive but very readable.

Pre-enrolment is necessary and for those who are interested, and request it, I will email some relevant scans of introductory literature.

Cost for session 1 is $60.00 with 10% discount for IYTA and YA members. PD points should be available.

Payment to: PJ &S Hockey BSB 704-191 a/c 71949

please include your name as a reference and e-mail me on payment - peterjameshockey@gmail.com

Sessions for 2019 will be:

  • The Later Upanishads *

  • The Bhagavad Gita*

  • The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali*.

Each session will include some chants or practices relevant to the texts under discussion. Pre-reading will be given to those who are enrolled and wish to prepare. It will be helpful but not essential. Some experience of yoga practices especially pranayama and meditative practices is advisable.

Of necessity, these sessions are designed as an overview of the texts and lessons rather than a full study which would require a great deal of invested effort and fully trained master rather than myself, a passionate advocate who wishes to encourage other enthusiastic students to embrace the deeper personal, spiritual meaning of the yoga experience .

*Dates to be decided for 2019
